After our podcast ranked in the top 20 in multiple countries around the world, we knew we could turn it into a business. Wanna know how we did it?
We’ve officially hit the one-year mark of the GrowGetters Club, and we are so grateful for everything we’ve achieved. We did it!
GrowGetters Club is a tight-knit and intimate community of women solopreneurs and side hustlers accountable to each other in following practical steps to grow and scale their businesses. GrowGetters Club has been a true collaborative product built by our amazing members, who have shaped its features and the mastermind concept.
Here’s a peek at what we’re all about and what we’ve accomplished in year 1.
THE VALUE OF THE CLUB
We started small by thinking of ways to make money from what we were doing and how we could get more women into our club. We hoped this would lead to something bigger and more prosperous for all of us. We were just a podcast, and we really enjoyed our podcast, but we missed your participation in our dialogue. So the club provides a platform for us to communicate with you, our listeners, and provide help.
There are a lot of talented women in the club who are making progress in their business careers. Memberships or programs typically have one person or a few people teaching something. With GrowGetters, everyone grows together. It’s about being heard and seen and feeling safe. That also makes it easier to be vulnerable because everyone is vulnerable in the group.
So we’re really excited that we’ve gotten to this point. We’ve completed one year, 12 months with some activity every week. It’s been an exciting time. We can’t wait for the next year as we have some significant steps planned.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR
Highlight #1 – The retention rate
We’ve had around 90% retention. So 90% of our founding members have stuck with us and helped shape the club. That’s been a highlight in itself. This initial prototype has gotten its wings, it’s flown, and we’ve attracted members from literally all over the world.
Highlight #2 – The caliber of women
These fantastic, bright minds make the club richer. These women are incredibly stellar. So having international women who probably would never have crossed paths in everyday life actually come together, learn from each other, and mastermind together has been the biggest highlight.
GrowGetters Club is not just another membership club. It’s not just another networking community or Facebook group. All of these things have their places. And we love Facebook groups. We love joining these types of communities, but we’ve got this tight-knit mastermind where women are doing. It’s really a doing club. Seeing our members make successful moves in their business has been a thrill. We’re guiding these women, and we’re also sharing our vulnerabilities and learnings with them. So we’re all growing together.
Highlight #3 – The insightful and practical discussions
We were thinking of how to help women make a change and make moves in their business. After exploring different formats and possibilities, we developed this thing called Round Tables, a monthly two-hour intensive learning plus doing experience. It was just an excellent little idea, and we prototyped it with our members. And actually, we can see that this is an incredibly successful feature.
Every month, I look forward to meeting up with everybody, learning, and doing. It’s so often that we have a great idea. We’ve got a business idea, but we just keep it parked because we don’t have the time. We don’t set aside the time to do it. In these roundtable sessions, we get to the doing. We have big group sessions, micro sessions, and individual sessions. We use different tools, online, offline, and hybrid.
Highlight #4 Adapting learning styles
We also have been adapting learning styles. For example, we do 15 minutes of work, break, 15 minutes of work, break. We’ve really adopted the latest learning methods to heighten your productivity during the sessions. We have Pomodoro sessions, which makes sure we have sessions of time that we work, and also we have the time for a breather.
THE LESSONS LEARNT
Lesson #1. It’s all about co-creation
Conducting member interviews is critical. Touching base with our members in an ongoing fashion helps us understand what is working and what isn’t. These are all standard prototyping principles, which sounds great in theory, but we’ve actually been doing it. This is fundamental and has been extremely rewarding.
The biggest advice to anyone running any form of subscription, course, service, or product is to get those user interviews conducted in an ongoing fashion so you can take those insights and feed it into your strategy and into the features you’re creating. So, it’s about co-creation.
Lesson #2. We can’t be everything for everyone
Kill your darlings when they don’t work to cut the redundancies. This was an important learning for us. When we developed the club, we had a vast amount of features. We put so much in there because we just wanted to pack the club full of value. As we went along, we realized the members we addressed were becoming narrower. So the target audience became a bit clearer for us. These also came out through the interviews that we did. We were addressing solopreneurs, side hustlers, and career climbers at the time.
As the months rolled around and we looked for content to serve the members and add value, we realized we needed to become sharper and more precise with the content we would share and coach on. For us, we realized that we needed to focus the club purely on solopreneurs and side hustlers. And that would help us hone the features and add value. So when we were trying to address three different audiences, it was a bit too broad and sometimes too fluffy. So we wanted to cut that fluff and focus on driving value. And that’s what we are hungry to do.
We’ve realized that we cannot be everything to everyone. It has been a massive learning to focus on a target audience and determine the exact value you can give. And that only comes through discussions, surveys, learning, and the interviews we did. We learned a lot from women inside and out of the club and women who would never join. We also interviewed them to understand what works for them, what they were looking for, where they got the information, and how we could serve women to grow and make moves.
From those interviews, what came out was that we needed to be accessible. So we developed a feature called the one-on-one virtual co-founder, which is a 30-minute session once a week.
It can be very tempting, especially when starting out with a membership, course, or these types of products, to just put the whole kahuna out there, like having this shopping list of amazing things. But ultimately, in the end, what is more valuable is honing in on a specific set of features and simplifying it. Those are the places where members will derive the most value. So that’s where you have to hone in on. And that’s been a massive lesson for us completely.
Lesson #3 – Interview people that decide not to join or exit
With this kind of business, there will always be acquisition, retention, and people exiting. That is the nature of the membership game. But what is super important is to conduct interviews at the early stages, especially with those exiting, and try to converse with them. A survey is super easy and probably more scalable. Still, there is something about having a discussion, a 15-minute chat on why they’re leaving, and asking the right questions to get under the skin and find out what was missing and wasn’t as valuable for them.
Perhaps them leaving or not joining has nothing to do with the product. Perhaps it’s more to do with whether they weren’t the right audience for you or they weren’t your right desired consumer. You won’t be able to find out until you have these chats. We recommend doing them, especially at the early stages of forming your membership. If you can, talk to the ones that almost make it through to sign up but don’t quite get over the edge. Get to understand what didn’t tip them over the edge to signing up. This is invaluable information and will make you tweak and improve things so you get better and better at what you do.
Bonus lesson – the discovery call
Also, interview people that do come through. These inform the features and new changes in the club. For example, our discovery calls used to go for an entire hour, which was a long time, and now they’re 15 minutes.
