After our podcast ranked in the top 20 in multiple countries around the world, we knew we could turn it into a business. Wanna know how we did it?
You might have a business, a product, an idea, or even a hobby. Maybe you’re a creator or an influencer that’s acquired many fans or a strong community along the way. But how can you convert your fans into paying customers? Because if there’s no genuine hot burning need for what you’re selling, there won’t be a desire to purchase.
We found that with this very podcast, we ranked in the top 20 in a whole bunch of countries around the world. We could see we had loads of people who resonated with our content in its free form. So we had to think outside the box on how to turn our fans into paying customers, not just listeners and followers. And our first port of call was understanding our potential paying customers.
In this episode, we’re going to get you started on defining who your ideal customer is with some tips, prompts, and questions to help you create that avatar persona or ideal user.
Firstly, you need to jot down what you think you already know about your ideal customer. Start by answering these questions. What is she like? Is she busy? Does she work full time? Part-time? How flexible is her lifestyle? What are the things she enjoys doing in her spare time? What media does she consume? What does she enjoy watching or reading? What is her day-to-day lifestyle like? Now we go a little bit deeper. What is she motivated by? What drives her in her life? Were there activities she loved to do that made an impact on her life? Were there certain moments or milestones that are important to her? What makes her get out of bed every day? Who inspires her?
Then, you can go into solution mode. How can you help her solve her problem? What could you do to help her have a smoother day to day? Does she have any pain points that you could alleviate? How can you add real value to her?
After you’ve started gathering data to validate or invalidate what you assume, I would strongly recommend conducting discovery user interviews of your potential customers and non-customers to really get a deep understanding of what makes them tick and help you to validate your assumptions.
We’ve spoken to hundreds of women and based on those interviews, we’ve made a critical turning point in our business. We’ve stopped serving one of our audience segments because we realized they don’t have a burning need to buy from us even though they’re happy to consume our content for free. We’ve shifted our positioning and become so much more clear on what we stand for.
It is essentially the user interviews and user research we’ve done that have helped us to fundamentally move from being a passion project into a now-thriving business. And this is the core foundational skill we teach our members in GrowGetters Club, as it underpins absolutely everything.
See you next time and let’s get growing!
