After our podcast ranked in the top 20 in multiple countries around the world, we knew we could turn it into a business. Wanna know how we did it?
There are tons of ways to make additional income and sell your skills. But today we focus on the ways that we think lend you the best credibility to your personal and professional brand and ways where you can actually control how you shape your product.
In this episode, we talk about our top five favorite ways to monetize your unique genius and turn your skills into digital knowledge-based products and services.
Blogging, podcasting, YouTubing, creating an e-newsletter, and tiktoking are just some of the most popular side hustles because it can be done from just about anywhere. And we started Growgetters, the business we founded as a podcast. So we can totally attest to that. It may not be profitable right away, but for content creators looking to build up a personal brand, an audience, and a portfolio, these mediums can go a long way to advance yourself. In fact, one of the most interesting things about blogging and podcasting in a roundabout way is that it has the ability to benefit your personal and professional brand in huge ways.
The big challenge with this type of side hustle or digital product is learning how to create content that makes a profit. If you think about a blog, page views don’t pay the bills, so you’ll likely need to do some adjacent work like referring readers to products through affiliate links, offering sponsored posts, or using advertisements. And when it comes to YouTubing and podcasts, it’s just as tricky to monetize these channels. But if you hit the ground running from the outset, you could even organize sponsors and brands for your show. You can use tools like Patreon to offer a place for your loyal fans and listeners to support you on a monthly basis. Or you can partner with brands to create micro products to offer to your audience.
There are so many ways to make money as a content creator. But you have to stick it out for the long haul and put in the hard work in order for it to pay off.
Creating a digital product is a great way to monetize your genius. It’s something we completely stand for and is our main jam at GrowGetters.
But what do we mean by digital product? We mean a product that takes your skill and packages it up into an easily digestible offer people can access digitally. Some examples of this could be as simple as a downloadable PDF or it could be something a bit more complex, such as an ebook, an online workshop, or a masterclass that you charge tickets for. Maybe it’s an app, an e-course, or even a membership. The focus here is an owned digital product that is created, sold, and distributed by you.
This can be packaged up as your own digital product, but there are also a bunch of online learning platforms you can tap into to help you market and distribute an online class. Platforms like Udemy, Skillshare, LinkedIn Learning, Code Academy, and Khan Academy. There are so many out there right now that allow you to create a class or a course from your unique skills, talents, and experience. And marketing via these platforms makes it a whole lot easier.
It’s amazing that you can actually get paid to create content for existing platforms and communities. For example, you could be a guest contributor to other publishing platforms that accept open submissions. Or you can earn speaking gigs you are an expert of, like speaking for Australia’s largest women’s media network, Mamma Mia. Opportunities like keynote presentations, panel events, workshops, and roundtable sessions at conferences. There are so many ways to contribute and get paid doing it.
Memberships and programs are an awesome recurring revenue miracle. Most memberships are not an overnight success, it does take a lot of effort, a lot of work to really cultivate your community. But a recurring membership business can be really profitable. Whether you’re offering software, personal coaching, online courses, or even a content subscription.
A membership site offers members exclusive access to gated content, as well as other members-only perks. This could be something as simple as special reports or articles, newsletters, webinars, online courses, offered only to your members. It could also be a special access and invitations to conferences, events, perks, products, or free shipping. There are so many ways to shape your membership or digital program.
And this is actually the way that we initially monetized the GrowGetters podcast because we created our high touch membership GrowGetters Club as our monetization vehicle, something a little bit different for a podcast.
These were our top five ways to monetize your skills, knowledge, and genius. We are here every week to teach you how to create more, do work that doesn’t even feel like you’re working, build your personal brand, and launch innovative digital products that people crave. Because GrowGetting is about tapping into your uniquely covetable skills or your passion area. In other words, your zone of genius and turning that into sellable desirable money-making digital products. Digital products that you can actually package up, market, and make additional income from.
